“Me?”
Chen Xu was caught off guard for a moment before realizing that the name the host had just called out was his own. He looked up at the stage and saw his name, Chen Xu, displayed on the projector screen.
“Don’t get too excited, it might be someone with the same name.”
Chen Xu hurriedly grabbed Dai Zixin to calm her down. His name was pretty common; it would be quite embarrassing if there were a mistake.
Moreover, he saw Supervisor Wang from the HR department walking over and speaking with the host.
At that moment, the entire banquet hall was in a bit of a tumult, with everyone discussing animatedly.
Most of the attendees were long-time employees, who were well aware of the unwritten rules of the lottery. Suddenly, the biggest prize was drawn under an unfamiliar name, and everyone was quite surprised.
“Hold on, there seems to be a mistake,” the host spoke again. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry, it turns out there was a glitch with the lottery software. This won’t do, we’ll have to redraw.”
The banquet hall went quiet for a moment, followed by an uproar.
Was this even allowed?
Dai Zixin was simply flabbergasted.
Chen Xu was also shocked. In front of so many suppliers, did they really not care about saving face?
Some employees who were already dissatisfied with the lottery mechanism seized the opportunity to stir things up, and loud chatter filled the banquet hall.
“Quiet down!” Old Wang from HR took the stage and spoke loudly, “Look at yourselves, what’s become of you?”
As the Supervisor of HR, Old Wang had considerable authority over the employees, and soon, everyone calmed down.
Just as he was about to hand the microphone back to the host, there was a loud bang. He glared angrily, seeking out who dared to challenge his authority but froze when he saw who it was.
From a table closest to the stage, Luo Xiyun had stood up, staring coldly at him, “Have you embarrassed yourself enough?”
Old Wang’s face flushed with embarrassment and anger as he said, “Director Luo, what do you mean by that?”
“The name drawn by the system is suddenly deemed invalid. In front of all these partners, have you no regard for Wanhua’s reputation? This is absurd.”
Luo Xiyun’s angry voice carried across most of the banquet hall and resonated with the employees, who began chanting, “Oppose the rigged lottery…”
Seeing that the situation was almost getting out of control, Old Wang looked desperately at another table for help.
“That’s enough.”
At this time, Liu Kun stood up, went on stage, and took the microphone from the host, “The banquet ends here. I ask the External Relations team to escort our guests back.”
People quickly began guiding the invited guests out of the banquet hall.
Soon, only the company’s own staff remained inside the now nearly empty, spacious banquet hall.
Liu Kun didn’t look at Supervisor Wang, who had turned pale, and continued with his directives, “Staff below the supervisor level may also leave. Chen Xu, stay behind.”
Chen Xu had just heard Luo Xiyun erupt in anger, seemingly tearing faces in public, and was a bit worried she would be at a disadvantage. Hearing Liu Kun requesting him to stay, he hesitated, then walked over.
The employees left quickly, and the vast banquet hall became eerily empty, save for around twenty people.
At this point, a man in his fifties, a Vice President, spoke up, “Niece, it’s just a small matter, no need to get so upset. Wang, come here and apologize to Director Luo.”
“A small matter?”
Luo Xiyun ignored Supervisor Wang, who had come running, and stared at the Vice President, “Do you know what people outside will think of us? Wanhua’s executives, for the sake of a small prize, throw away their dignity. An ordinary employee gets the big prize and it’s declared invalid, just like that. You might as well take a loudspeaker and announce to everyone that the prize had already been fixed.”
The Vice President’s face started to show he couldn’t take much more, “Luo Xiyun, what kind of attitude is that?”
Someone nearby tugged at his arm, “Old Wang, just say less.”
Luo Xiyun took a deep breath, looked at the people in front of her, and slowly said, “Before, I respected you as veterans of the company because I didn’t want to make things difficult for you regarding face. But what I didn’t expect was that you wouldn’t take Wanhua’s reputation seriously at all. I’m very disappointed in you.”
The complexion of Vice President Wang, who had the surname Wang, changed, and just as he was about to speak, an elderly man with graying hair spoke up, “This matter was Wang Dinning’s fault. You should resign.”
Wang Dinning was Supervisor Wang’s name. Upon hearing this, his face instantly turned pale, but he didn’t dare to defend himself.
Chen Xu saw how Luo Xiyun confronted Vice President Wang head-on, completely overwhelming all the senior executives with her presence, and he couldn’t help but see her in a new light. In the end, it was even necessary for Mr. Wu to intervene and sort things out, and in the blink of an eye, Supervisor Wang was taken care of.
That’s when he realized something was amiss—Luo Xiyun’s position in the company seemed overly high, to the point where even the boss had to bow down to her.
If it were any other supervisor who dared to challenge Vice President Wang, that person would’ve been put in their place within minutes.
As far as he knew, Vice President Wang was Mr. Wu’s uncle.
“You’re the employee who won the grand prize, right? Come here.” Mr. Wu suddenly waved Chen Xu over, who had been standing on the periphery. As soon as Mr. Wu spoke, a path opened up in front of him.
He walked over, calling out, “Mr. Wu.”
Mr. Wu asked, “Which department are you from?”
At this moment, Supervisor Wang, who looked ashen-faced, remembered something and saw it as a lifeline, shouting loudly, “Mr. Wu, he’s already in the process of resignation and doesn’t qualify to participate in the draw. That’s why I went on stage to declare the results void.”
With those words, expressions of those around began to change.
“Is that the situation?” Mr. Wu asked Chen Xu.
Chen Xu nodded and said, “I am officially resigning on the tenth of next month.”
“Hmph, since you have resigned, you naturally don’t qualify for the draw.” Vice President Wang finally found an opportunity and said coldly, “In my opinion, he shouldn’t even be eligible for the year-end bonus. It should be taken back.”
Chen Xu immediately countered, “That’s not right, my resignation process isn’t completed yet. As an employee of the company, why wouldn’t I qualify?”
Vice President Wang snorted coldly, “If I say you don’t, then you don’t. This isn’t your place to speak up.”
Just as Chen Xu was about to argue his case, Luo Xiyun stepped forward and shielded him, facing Vice President Wang with a defiant tone, “Wang Mingsen, you don’t get to lecture my people. As long as he hasn’t left the company, he is part of my electronic marketing department. Who says he doesn’t qualify?”
“You—” Vice President Wang didn’t expect her to be so rude to him over an ordinary employee, only enough to make his face turn red with anger.
“Enough.” Mr. Wu interrupted him, and said, “I announce that the results of this draw are valid. The grand prize goes to Chen Xu of the electronic marketing department. This will be communicated to the whole company. Dismissed.”
With that, he turned and left, followed by the other executives. Vice President Wang, having lost so much face, looked incomparably livid as he departed.
The most unfortunate one had to be Wang Zhuguan, who wanted to brown-nose but hit a steel plate instead, becoming the scapegoat.
“I’m going to leave now.”
Liu Kun was the last to leave, telling Luo Xiyun before taking his secretary and departing.
Then, only Secretary Guo, Luo Xiyun, and Chen Xu were left.
“I’m going to the restroom.” Secretary Guo, quite perceptively, found an excuse to leave.
In the banquet hall, only Chen Xu and Luo Xiyun remained.
“Thank you.” Chen Xu knew that if it wasn’t for her stepping in on his behalf, it would have been impossible for him to truly receive the grand prize.
Luo Xiyun said indifferently, “I just dislike their practices,” and then she walked toward the exit.
Chen Xu followed behind without saying a word.
When they were almost at the door, she spoke again, “Since you’ve chosen to start your own business, do it well.”
Chen Xu was taken aback before he said, “Thank you.”
