Chapter 65: Chapter 65 Cold Embrace
There were going to be many people at the birthday party, and Pei Yansi thought there would be just one more guest, and no one would pay attention to Bai Sheng’er.
He would only give her the identity of a guest to participate, just to join in the fun.
After Zhao Jin left, he quickly prepared everything and took it to the old house of the Pei Family.
He bought many nutritional products, most of which were beneficial for pregnancy. He only reached the living room, gave the items to the housekeeper, and then left.
The housekeeper took everything up to Shen Heyu’s room, and while placing them down, she said, “Madam, all these are prepared by the sir for you. It seems he is really concerned about you and the child.”
Shen Heyu looked at the numerous items, all expensive, and did not know what Pei Yansi was up to, especially since just the day before yesterday, he had said that it was up to her whether to keep the child.
She did not react much; thinking she might not know how to use them, the housekeeper, being experienced herself, opened one of the supplements, took out a box of folic acid, and handed it to her, “This is folic acid; you can take some every day. There are some others that you can take according to the directions. If you feel uncomfortable, tell me immediately, and I will call the family doctor.”
Shen Heyu nodded weakly, “Just put it down anywhere.”
To make it convenient for her, the housekeeper placed the items on her bedside table before leaving.
The old lady’s birthday party was tomorrow, and Shen Heyu was still feeling unwell. The old lady especially gave her time off, allowing her to rest in her room.
Feeling uncomfortable, she decided not to persist.
She lay in bed until the evening, and around seven or eight o’clock, Pei Yansi returned from the company.
He rushed into their marital bedroom without even changing his clothes and saw Shen Heyu resting obediently on the bed, as well as the opened nutritional supplements on the bedside table; evidently, she had used the things he provided.
An unusual tenderness touched his heart as he walked to the bedside and asked, “Have you been lying down all day?”
Shen Heyu weakly nodded, “I don’t have much strength in my body.”
“Get up and walk a bit; the more you lie down, the weaker you will feel,” he said, pulling back the covers and personally helping her sit up.
Shen Heyu wanted to refuse, but seeing his concentrated expression and unprecedentedly gentle eyes, she ultimately did not voice her refusal.
He fetched a heavier jacket, dressed her bit by bit, then led her downstairs. When they reached the downstairs living room, he told the nutritionist, “Make some soup for the madam to drink later.”
Shen Heyu followed him out of the Pei family ancestral home. The ancestral home was in a quiet suburban area, surrounded by an excellent green belt; the early autumn season made the air fresh and cool.
Stepping out, Shen Heyu indeed felt much more comfortable than lying down.
The two of them walked one after another, neither speaking, and the only sound in the night was their footsteps. Pei Yansi involuntarily slowed down, waiting for her to catch up so they could walk shoulder to shoulder.
The streetlights elongated their shadows, and Shen Heyu watched their shadows cast together on the ground. Ignoring the actual parties involved, she thought their shadows looked like an extremely sweet couple.
She asked, “Why did you come back tonight?” Ever since their inexplicable fight last time, he hadn’t come home much.
Pei Yansi’s face darkened at her question, “Can’t I come back?”
“You know that’s not what I meant.”
Pei Yansi was silent, and after walking with her a little longer, he led her back.
After returning, Shen Heyu entered the room first. After washing up again, she lay down in bed, and it wasn’t long before Pei Yansi came in, holding a bowl of soup.
He walked to the bedside and said, “First, get up and drink this soup.”
Shen Heyu frowned and said, “I really don’t want to move.”
“Sit up,” Pei Yansi commanded in a tone that brooked no refusal, pulling her up to lean against the headboard, then he picked up a spoon and brought it to her lips.
Shen Heyu, feeling cherished yet shocked, looked at him surprisingly, “I can do it myself.”
“Open your mouth.”
Pei Yansi frowned, his tone slightly impatient as he stared into her eyes with a warning.
She reluctantly opened her mouth.
He spoon-fed her the soup one spoonful at a time, looking at the room’s French window. “Next time I’m not here, check the windows yourself to make sure they are shut. You need to know when to layer up or down with the changing seasons. You’re like a child; if you don’t get sick, who will?”
His words were unsparing, yet Shen Heyu, perhaps due to her pregnancy’s heightened sensitivities, could somehow detect a hint of care within them.
She didn’t speak, but obediently nodded.
After the last sip of soup, Pei Yansi’s phone on the bedside table rang.
Both glanced over and saw the caller was Bai Sheng’er.
Knowing Bai Sheng’er’s call meant he would leave, Shen Heyu courteously turned her head away.
Unexpectedly, he didn’t even answer the phone; instead, he switched it off, took the bowl out to the maid, came back after washing up, and lay down beside her.
Although, as usual, there was a considerable distance between them, Shen Heyu felt differently inside.
She couldn’t help but ask, “Why didn’t you answer her call? What if it was something urgent?”
“You seem eager to push me towards someone else,” Pei Yansi said coldly. “Have you forgotten who you are?” She was Mrs. Pei, and this is how she treated her husband?
Shen Heyu couldn’t comprehend the meaning of his last sentence and ultimately said nothing more and closed her eyes to sleep. That night, she felt a chilling breeze sweeping across her, making her shiver.
In her drowsy state, she felt the man beside her was like a furnace, radiating warmth. But restrained by years of control from this man, she dared not move closer and just embraced herself, enduring it.
Pei Yansi was awakened by her shivering.
Feeling the slight tremors in the bed and being a light sleeper, he groggily opened his eyes and realized the woman beside him was trembling. Reaching out, he touched her, and it felt like touching a block of ice.
He frowned, did she not know she couldn’t be cold near him?
He extended his hand, pulled her close into his embrace, and held her tightly. His body warmth continuously flowed to her.
Enshrouded in a sleepy haze, Shen Heyu felt the warmth and became much more comfortable, closing her eyes and falling deeply asleep again.
Seeing her motionless, Pei Yansi, aided by the nocturnal light, could vaguely make out her pale, delicate face. Thinking of her carrying his child, he couldn’t help but cautiously stretch out his hand and gently stroke her belly.
Very carefully, afraid of either disturbing the child or her.
Feeling someone embracing and tenderly stroking her belly, Shen Heyu, knowing intuitively it was her husband since their marriage, perhaps sensitive because of the pregnancy, inadvertently snuggled closer into his embrace.
